I started working on interface engineering for oxide electronics already during both my MSc and PhD at the University of Twente (Netherlands) with a stay at Stanford University (USA). During my postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), my research was broadened into the field of multiferroic applications to study the magnetic and electronic interactions at various oxide interfaces. In 2009 I started my research group at the University of Twente as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor. At the same time I became program director of the strategic research orientation ‘Nanomaterials for Energy’ within the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology to exploit and expand the present expertise in the field of nano-related energy research. In these positions, I was successful in obtaining financial support (e.g. EU FP7 projects and personal VENI grant (2010)) in the field of thermoelectrics, photovoltaics and artificial photosynthesis, where high-performance oxide interfaces are crucial. In 2013 I became Associate Professor and shifted the focus to next-generation batteries, for which I received the personal VIDI grant (2014) and several other funded projects (e.g. Perspectief, ECHO). In 2016 I obtained a permanent position withius promovendi.Furthermore, since 2018 I have been appointed as Guest Scientist within the IEK-1 Electrochemical Storage Department of Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany). Since January 2022 I became Full Professor of the chair 'Nanomaterials for Energy Conversion and Storage' with a young and enthusiastic research teamin studying innovative nanomaterials for realizing enhanced energy conversion and storage applications. Currently there are various ongoing research projects on innovative battery materials (BatteryNL, NXTGEN Hightech, Maritime Batteries, VICI grant 2023) often in large consortia of universities and industry. Finally, I have a leading role in the Battery Centre Twente, which was established to strengthen research programs on regional, national and European levels.

2022 – present Full Professor, Nanomaterials for Energy Conversion and Storage Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2018 – present Guest Scientist IEK-1 Electrochemical Storage Department, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany.

2016 – 2021 Associate Professor (with ius promovendi) Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2013 – 2016 Associate Professor, Tenure Track Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2009 – 2014 Program director of the strategic research orientation ‘Nanomaterials for Energy’,MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2009 – 2013 Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2008 – 2009 Postdoctoral researcher, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands.

2006 – 2008 Postdoctoral researcher, Physics & Materials Science departments, University of California, Berkeley, USA.

2000 Sep-Dec Student Internship, Applied Physics department, Stanford University, USA.

Nanomaterials for Energy Conversion and Storage

The research is focused on the study of novel nanostructured thin films with special structural and advanced functional properties at the incorporated interfaces. The aim is to develop new materials towards improved energy applications, such as solid-state batteries and thermoelectric energy generators. This research is part of the “Storage and Conversion of Renewable Energy” application area of the MESA+Institute for Nanotechnology, which goal it is to exploit and expand the present expertise in the field of nano-related energy research through multidisciplinary collaboration between various research groups. The Battery Centre Twentebrings togetherall battery research activities at the University of Twente.
