Davis Services Friday Services for former Akron Service Director Marvin L. Davis, 78, will be at 11:30 a. m. Friday in the Fairchild funeral home, Fort 1 Lauderdale, Fla.

Burial will be in Lauderdale Memorial cemetery. Mr. Davis died Wednesday in Broward General Medical Center, Fort Lauderdale after a short illness. Mr. Davis served 10 years in that position in Mayor Charles E.

Slusser's cabinet. During his term as service director, the original plans were made for the current expressway system. FOUR YEARS after he took office, in 1947, he and B. E. "Shorty" Fulton, Akron municipal airport manager, battled over the transfer of commercial airline operations from Municipal Airport to the then new and larger AkronCanton Field.

The battle against the move was before a Civil Aeronautics Board. During his last years in office, controversy was raised when an investigation revealed that Mr. Davis owned 20 shares of Orr-Thomas Oil Co. stock and that virtually all of the city's gasoline business during the late '40s and early '50s had gone to that same company. He transfered the stock to his wife Maureen C.

after the illegality of his ownership was called to attention by a state examiner at City Hall. DAVIS SAID at the time of the controversy that he had bought the stock when the firm was organized and before the city did any business with them. He also said that mistakes might have been made in awarding contracts to. OrrThomas. He also said that contracts were made to the lowest bidder.

Before becoming service director he had been head of the civil engineering department at Firestone for many years. He also served as service director under Mayor Russell Bird. A YEAR after leaving Akron, he was appointed area engineering manager for the first leg of the Florida turnpike. He also was chief engineer for the remainder of the five-year project which takes the turnpike from Miami, to the Georgia state line. Cars Sold To Police WASHINGTON The Ford Motor with evidence that the front wheels of vehicles sold for police use have fallen out of place while in motion, recalled 85,000 of the cars Wednesday. A possible defect was discovered in the lower control arms on full-size Ford and Mercury models sold over the past five years. The lower control arms, crucial for safety because they hold the wheels in place, are on each side of the front end.

Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe requested the recall after a five-month investigation by the National Highway Safety Bureau (NHSB). FORD WOULD not give an estimate of the cost of the recall. However, the lower con- Bus Bursts Into Flames trol I arms reportedly at $33.50 each, which means the cost of the recall could exceed $5 million excluding labor. The Safety Burea's investigation included examination of 504 vehicles.

Both police and non-police cars were used, although NHSB did not know the exact breakdown. IN THIS investigation, 90 control arm failures were found. These were in three model years, 1967, 1968 and 1969. Fifty-three of the failures were in police pursuit cars mostly Ford Custom, Custom 500 and Mercury Monterey models. The NHSB said six million vehicles were made with the same type of control arms that failed.

David Paul Bruce, 22, of San Bernadino, said he was traveling east toward Indio on Interstate 10 when "this old bus came over the hill with fire pouring out all its windows."
