What happened in the Battle for Azeroth? ›

Tensions escalated between the Alliance and the Horde as both factions came to realize the true power of Azerite, igniting a full-scale war leading to the fall of Teldrassil and the Undercity. Weakened and in need of new allies, the Alliance and the Horde called upon their greatest heroes to bolster their ranks.

In contrast to previous expansions, which went live at midnight in each time zone, Battle for Azeroth had a simultaneous release for all regions, corresponding to midnight Central European Summer Time on August 14, 2018.

If your character is level 61 or above, go to any Kul Tiras or Zandalar zone to have the Battle for Azeroth banner and instructions for where to go next appear in your quest log.

We previously noted that Patch 10.1 would remove the Pathfinder requirement to unlock flying in Battle for Azeroth zones, but today's official patch notes indicate that feature has been moved up to Patch 10.0. 7 instead! Flying in Battle for Azeroth zones no longer requires Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder.

BfA content is not mandatory, but you can complete it fully for the story - XP gains will cease or drop to a minuscule amount like 400 per quest when dinging 50.
